From a Small Dream to a 17-Year Journey: The Story of BHP Production

Guwahati | Special Feature

Every successful journey begins with a dream. Some dreams fade away with time, while others evolve into stories that inspire generations. The journey of BHP Production is one such story, built on vision, perseverance and an unwavering belief in innovation.

Founded in 2009, BHP Production started as a small media initiative with limited resources but limitless ambition. At a time when digital media was still in its early stages in Assam, the organisation set out to explore opportunities in entertainment, music, education and digital publishing.

The first major milestone came in 2011 with the production of the Assamese video film Bohagor Rong. The film was released on January 10, 2012, marking BHP Production’s entry into the entertainment industry. While the project may not have made national headlines, it established a foundation for future ventures and strengthened confidence in the organisation’s creative vision.

In 2014, BHP Production launched MusicAssam.com, a digital platform dedicated to Assamese music. The timing was significant. India was still largely operating on 2G and 3G internet networks, and the digital streaming revolution had yet to reach many parts of the country. Despite the limitations, the platform aimed to bring Assamese music into the digital ecosystem.

Looking back today, the initiative can be seen as a forward-thinking step. At a time when many regional industries were still dependent on traditional distribution methods, MusicAssam.com attempted to embrace the opportunities offered by the internet.

The organisation continued to diversify its efforts in 2015 with the launch of Vidarthi.com, an educational platform designed to support students through digital services and examination-related information. Although the project did not achieve long-term success, it reflected the team’s willingness to experiment and innovate in different sectors.

Another important chapter began in 2017 with the launch of Dapon – The Mirror of Life, an online magazine focused on literature, culture and creative expression. The platform earned appreciation from writers and readers and created a digital space for Assamese literary voices.

Around the same period, BHP Production also started producing long-form interviews, artist interactions, talk shows and live discussions on social media platforms. Interestingly, this was before podcasting became widely recognised in the region. While the content was not officially described as podcasts at the time, many of these conversations followed a format that closely resembles modern podcast culture.

Several artists, musicians, actors and public figures participated in these programmes, helping create meaningful digital conversations and audience engagement long before such formats became mainstream.

The digital journey expanded further in 2018 with the launch of the Music Assam mobile application. The app aimed to strengthen the digital presence of Assamese music and provide audiences with easier access to regional content.

In 2019, years of effort culminated in the formal registration of BHP Production Private Limited. For the team behind the organisation, it was more than a legal milestone. It represented years of dedication, risk-taking and continuous learning.

However, like many businesses and creative organisations across the world, BHP Production faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns and economic uncertainty of 2020 and the years that followed forced several projects to slow down or come to a halt.

Despite these setbacks, the organisation maintained its presence through social media platforms, websites and digital channels. While many initiatives paused, the vision remained alive.

Reflecting on the journey, one lesson stands out. Innovation often requires patience. Some ideas arrive before the market is ready for them. Several initiatives launched by BHP Production were introduced during a period when digital adoption in the region was still developing. Years later, many of those concepts, including streaming platforms, digital media services and long-form online conversations, have become an integral part of everyday life.

Today, in 2026, BHP Production completes 17 years of its journey. The story has witnessed success, setbacks, experimentation, adaptation and growth. More importantly, it demonstrates how persistence and belief can keep a vision alive even during the most challenging times.

Behind this journey stands entrepreneur and media professional Hridaya Nanda Sarma, whose efforts have played a key role in shaping the organisation’s direction over the years.

As BHP Production enters a new phase, the organisation has hinted at an upcoming project that is expected to mark the beginning of another chapter in its evolving story.

For now, the details remain under wraps.

But one thing is clear: after 17 years of dreams, challenges and innovation, the journey is far from over.
